The St George Art Awards, first premiering in 2010, have become Hurstville Library Museum & Gallery’s most significant art event.

The biennial Art Awards provide an important opportunity for members of the local and wider community, including youth, seniors and multicultural communities, to display their artistic talents.


St George Art Prize 2016 - $8,000


Theme: Reflection

Open to all Australian permanent residents for 2D paintings
Artists must be 18 years or over on the date of entry

St George 3D Art Prize - $3,000


Theme: Reflection

Open to all Australian permanent residents for 3D works
No age restriction

St George Local Youth Prize – 2 x $250 worth of art materials

(1x primary student and 1x secondary/tertiary student)


No theme, open to either paintings or drawings

Open to youth living, studying or working in the St George region
Artists must be 17 years or under at the date of entry

People’s Choice - $500


All finalists’ works are eligible for the ‘People’s Choice Award’
Judging is based on votes from visitors to the exhibition

Judges may award additional prizes and commendations at their discretion.

*The winning work of the major category, the St George Art Prize 2016, will become part of Hurstville Library, Museum & Gallery’s art collection which aims to collect artwork of acknowledged merit or historical significance.


Theme for 2016

To be eligible, artists must submit work which relates to the following theme:

Reflection [ri-flek-shun] – noun*

  1. The act of reflecting, as in casting back a light or heat, mirroring, giving back or showing an image; the state of being reflected in this way.

  2. An image; representation; counterpart.

  3. A fixing of the thoughts on something; careful consideration.

  4. A thought occurring in consideration or meditation.

  5. An unfavourable remark or observation; the casting of some imputation or reproach.

*The theme is open to individual interpretation, enabling artists to explore a vast range of possibilities. There is no theme for the St George Local Youth Prize.


Entries open: Friday 1 July 2016 at 10.00am

Entries close: Friday 9 September 2016 at 4.00pm

Notification: All successful artists will be notified 
by Thursday 29 September 2016

Delivery of successful artworks: 
Thursday 6 October – Sunday 9 October 2016

Exhibition dates: 
Saturday 22 October – Thursday 15 December 2016

Collection of artworks: 
Saturday 17 December – Monday 19 December 2016
